Mango, open source M2M |
|
|
Mango is browser-based, Ajax-enabled M2M software that enables users to
access and control electronic sensors, devices, and machines over multiple protocols simultaneously. Easy to
download and install on many platforms, Mango provides an interface with which diverse data sources can be
created and configured along with an intuitive rules engine for setting up access, monitoring, alerts, data
logging, control, transformation, and communication.
It looks like it is primarily based around modbus right now, but they are working on expanding into other protocols/hardware. It is open source, so it will be very interesting to see where this project goes. I'd love to see Insteon support get worked in.

INSTEON Input/Output Controller |
|
|
"The INSTEON Input/Output Controller ($149.99 through smarthome.com) can be used to monitor and control
low voltage devices such as contact closures, outdoor lights, appliance
relays and alarm systems
With support for eight outputs or three inputs or a combination thereof
(3 inputs, 1 output), you can detect and monitor external events, such
as a garage door contact closure or a temperature sensor.
The inputs can then send out a preprogrammed INSTEON group command to
any device in your INSTEON network or any device connected to the
unit's outputs used to control any low AC voltage load, such as light
dimmers, speed controls for electric fans and alarm systems."
Oh yeah, finally gonna move my doorstike over from X10!

Death of the cell phone charger |
|
|
Powercast, led by a Pennsylvania entrepreneur, has developed technology that allows you to wirelessly charge mobile electronic devices. They have partnered with over 100 companies including Philips. Not that this is a new idea, but it looks like we may actually be seeing it on the market before too long. link

kmando is software for camera-projector interaction developed by
Juan Roldan, Ushakiran Soutapalli, Julien Faucher, and Jan Wedekind at
the Microsystem & Machine Vision Laboratory (MMVL) at Sheffield
Hallam University, UK. It makes use of a low cost off-the shelf webcam that is
calibrated against a standard projector screen. The webcam is used to
determine the position of physical pointer (e.g. a pen) which is then
used to virtually move the X11 pointer. Point-and-click functionality
has also been implemented. Cool stuff.

One of the wildest building ideas ever. |
|
|
Apparently, this is about to be what springs out of the highly regulated building environment in Singapore. It is an apartment complex consisting of four towers attached above ground level to one central supporting tower in an effort to minimize the building's footprint. You gotta see it to believe.

Revolutionary Underwater Breathing Apparatus |
|
|
fta: "An Israeli Inventor has developed a
breathing apparatus that will allow breathing underwater without the
assistance of compressed air tanks. This new invention will use the
relatively small amounts of air that already exist in water to supply
oxygen to both scuba divers and submarines. The invention has already
captured the interest of most major diving manufacturers as well as the
Israeli Navy."

Altoids tin survival kit |
|
|
I grew up reading "Field & Stream" magazine but only recently came across their great website. My girl and I love camping, so I decided to go a bit off-topic and start posting some camping related articles on the site. Here's a great survival kit that fits into an Altoids tin.
fta: "This is ideal for anyone who wants to have the essential survival gear
along each time they head into the field. Everything fits in the
Altoids tin. It fulfills all the component groups (see “Make
Your Own,” last slide) except for shelter and protection, but add a
survival blanket to your pocket and you’ll be covered."

|
|
fta: "Shooting, editing, and producing video clips has been my passion for
about 10 years. As a free software adept, I always tried to perform

that work for me. This article provides a brief tutorial on home video
production."
