Made to order MythTV |
|
|
You can buy a TiVo, a TiVo-like video recorder, or a Microsoft Media center PC, but who knows how long you'll be able to keep/record all your shows - so - I usually try and get folks to take MythTV for a swing, an open source alternative. That said, sometimes setting up a Linux box isn't for everyone, so if you still want to go open source but want to spend some bucks to get going, MonolithMC has made to order MythTV boxes starting at $650 - [via] - Link.

Burning Man Google Maps Mashups |
|
If you're heading to this year's Burning Man Festival on Aug.28 - Sep.4th this year,
Burning Man Beatmaps
might help you discover events being held at the event that you
otherwise might have never have heard about. The mashup comes from a
newly launched event mashup called Beatmaps
which includes categories for all types of events, including Burning
Man. The interface is easy to use and it uses keywords and tagclouds to
help you find information within the site. A nifty calendar helps you
find date based event info as well. The Burning Man mashup lets you
explore a list of all events and quickly learn how wild and crazy this
event must be. It also acts as a great event map!
Meanwhile, 'The Civilized Explorer' features a wiki for folks visiting the Burning Man Festival with a link to a
Tagzania map
showing locations of places to shop in Reno for out of town visitors.

HOW TO - Direct to PCB ink jet resist printing |
|
|
Volkan and Stefan have a clever way to make PCBs (Printed circuit boards), they write - "This page details the modification of an Epson C84 InkJet printer with MISPRO Inks to feed and directly print resist patterns to copper clad printed circuit board stock, ready for etching. Once you can feed the PCB through the printer for etch resist, you can then feed it back through the printer for solder mask and for a component "silk-screen". Toner transfer is probably easier to set up for and may be as fast, but direct ink is more precise, allows solder mask and component printing in the appropriate color, and it appears to be much more precise and repeatable, allowing for finer double sided boards without alignment issues." - Link.

Linux based Qtopia Greenphone |
|
|
Well, I'm really hoping this takes off - it's 2006 and the "advanced" phones are still pretty crummy in one way or another - Trolltech has just announced a new GSM/GPRS Linux based phone platform / SDK - "Qtopia Greenphone is a Linux mobile development device open for unlimited software innovation. Offered as part of the Greenphone SDK, it makes Linux-based applications easier to build and faster to bring to market. This powerful GSM/GPRS device provides the perfect platform for creation, testing and demonstration of new mobile technology services and ships loaded with Qtopia Phone Edition." [via] - Link.

New 'No Military Use' GPL For GPU |
|
Tina Gasperson writes "GPU is a Gnutella client that creates ad-hoc supercomputers by allowing individual PCs on the network to share CPU resources with each other. That's intriguing enough, but the really interesting thing about GPU is the license its developers have given it. They call it a 'no...

Self-contained war driving box |
|
|
The Church of Wifi has been really busy since we last
checked in with them. They showed a lot of cool projects
yesterday. I was really impressed by the modded WRT54Gs that their members have been building. beakmyn’s
self contained war driving
box article was what really kicked this off. He covers adding GPS, SD card, and all the needed software to the WRT.
Once completed all you have to do is plug the box in, go for a drive and then just pull the card when you get home to
retrieve the data.

Ultimate garage door monitor |
|
Want your home automation system to know the exact position of your garage door not just whether it is open or
closed? Then the ultimate garage door monitor is for you.
There has got to be at least one person that needs that, right? Well for the rest of you it is a handy guide for how-to
implement analog sensors (like this potentiometer) into your home automation by way of an analog to digital
converter.
