Giving yourself a "sixth sense" for wireless networks |
|
|
fta: "This project is for a small electronic unit that allows the user to sense the presence and relative signal strength of
wireless hotspots. It can be worn as a pendant or carried in a pocket. It is "always on" and communicates the
presence and signal strength of an in-range hotspot by way of sequences of pulses - like a heartbeat you can feel.
The stronger and faster the "heartbeat", the stronger the wireless signal detected.
It does not actually authenticate or otherwise interact with a hotspot in any way. It is a 100% passive device,
meaning it transmits nothing --- it can detect hotspots, but cannot be detected itself."

Backtrack 2.0 Final Released! |
|
|
from Remote-Exploit.org
"It's taken us almost 5 months to pull ourselves out of the beta stage.
Every time we thought we were done, a new idea or improvement would
surface, and we just *had* to implement it. Many features were added,
and many of the old (yet persistent) bugs were fixed. We honestly
believe that BackTrack v 2.0 Final is the leanest, mind blowing and
sexiest version to come out and hope that you enjoy using it as much as
we did making it. Find more information on our wiki at http://backtrack.offensive-security.com"

How Real ID will affect you |
|
Starting three years from now, if you live or work in the United
States, you'll need a federally approved ID card to travel on an
airplane, open a bank account, collect Social Security payments, or
take advantage of nearly any government service. Practically speaking,
your driver's license likely will have to be reissued to meet federal
standards. link

How-To Fix an iPod that Won’t Boot |
|
FTA: "There are a number of things that can go wrong with an iPod, but, like
any other computer, the majority of the ailments are hard-drive based,
usually taking the form of a boot error: either a sad iPod face,
constant Apple logo, or folder-with-exclamation-mark icon when it’s
turned on. Fortunately, these problems are easier to fix than people
realize, and we’ve come up with a five-point plan for getting your
little friend back on its feet." link

Just gotta love the RIAA |
|
|
The Copyright Royalty Board, the group overseeing statutory licensing for US-based internet radio stations, announced
the new royalty rates for streaming radio performance rights. The board
rejected the arguments made by webcasters and instead chose to adopt
the proposal put forth by industry-backed SoundExchange, a royalty fee
collection agency created by the RIAA.
The new rates are based on “performances” of songs. A “performance”
is defined as one song being streamed to a single listener. In other
words, a station with 1000 listeners is charged for 1000 performances
of each song it broadcasts.
Further, the new rates, just announced today, are retroactive to 2006, and increase rapidly each year. link

supports wireless text messaging and enables users to acknowledge
messages by using the tag’s two integrated call buttons. [...] enterprises are able to
use their own Wi-Fi networks for tracking applications and two-way
communications, rather than managing and paying for separate paging
services."

turn your iPod mini into a flash based iPod |
|
|
Here is a cool article from the folks over at geektechnique.org on replacing the microdrive in an iPod mini with a CF card. FTA, "with prices of flash memory cards dropping and sizes increasing, the
idea was born to replace the microdrive inside my Mini with a 4GB
Compact Flash card. I can’t see a reason why a bigger card wouldn’t
work but 4GB was the maximum my budget would allow me at this moment."

How to install x on OSX |
|
|
My kickass notebook, flightor, recently experienced a screen-smashing episode that he seems unlikely to recover from. Due to this unfortunate turn of events, I have once again begun the search for a new book. After reading a ton of fanboy articles on the new macbooks, I decided to see where my options lay on that field. I'll probably end up going with another dy, but here are a couple of step-by-step guides I came across for installing Ubuntu and Vista on OSX using Parallels.
