Home controller - Intro of time scheduler and regulator modes |
"SerReg is a small home controller intended to turn your personal computer ( PC ) into a process control / data collection system. With the appropriate sensors SerReg can monitor physical variables such as pressure, temperature, light intensity, weight, movement etc, process the information and then use the result to control up to three physical devices such as motors, heaters, sirens, lights or other appliances around the home, office, laboratory or factory .[via] - Link.

Quantum Encryption |
Scientists have created an unbreakable cypher through the use of quantum physics. "Uncertainty is the principle we exploit," says MagiQ's VP for engineering. "It's impossible to find the key, because the photon can be measured once and only once. An eavesdropper can't measure it, and so can't get the key." Props to Heisenberg!

GOP robo-calling as Democratic candidates to annoy voters |
The GOP is making robo-calls that initially claim to be from local Democratic candidates. If the caller hangs up, it calls the same number back as many as 7 or 8 times. "iTunes" jukebox - a physical playlist device |
I must say this is the closest to true "Gibsonesque" embedded-culture non-geek tech that i have seen. . . "Welcome to the iTunes Jukebox, a cartridge-based physical interface to iTunes. Using the iTunes Jukebox, during a party you can play your mp3s remotely instead of being chained to your computer. The jukebox is a small tower that houses several jewel cases. As the jewel cases are interchanged, the jukebox communicates with iTunes, changing the songs on demand. In essence, the jukebox allows users to create a physical playlist of their mp3s.

HOW TO - Turn your EAGLE schematic into a PCB (Printed circuit boards) |
Westfw writes - "In a previous Instructable, I provided an intro to schematic entry using CadSoft's EAGLE editor.
In this instructable, we'll make a printed circuit board from that schematic. I guess I should say that we'll make a PCB DESIGN; making the physical board is a different task, and there are a lot of tutorials on the net (and even some instructables) on making the board after you have the design." - Link

ThinkSafe: A Magnetic Power Connector for Thinkpads (DIY Apple power connector!) |
Outstanding, here's a DIY version of those fancy magnetic Apple power connectors, Breath writes - "My Thinkpad's power connection started getting flaky, so I made a magnetic connector that works just like Apple's MagSafe connectors. It's effective, cool-looking, and breaks away cleanly when kicked. I used common materials that I had around or could find at my local hardware store, so you should be able to duplicate my efforts. Environmental monitoring |
[Daniel Klien] sent in his thermd environmental monitoring project. It's written in perl, but the cool part is the sheer number of supported devices. It's pretty rare when a single developer is given test hardware so he can add support for it.
Sure, this isn't a hardware hack, but temperature logging is one of those irritating problems of hardware hacking. I've got loads of uses for it - coffee roasting, house management, battery charging, monitoring for my EV motorcycle project.
